Our Binghamton Ross Park Zoo has a new addition, it’s a Sand Cat, the native of Asia comes to us from the Hogle Zoo in Utah.

According to a press release from the Ross Park Zoo the sand cat named “Amal” was born in July of 2019 and is part of a survival plan for this particular species.

Although not on the verge of extinction, they could be one day unless they are under observation, and protection from their main predators, that include Owls and Snakes.

Sand Cats are found in the Sahara Desert, so they have to be able to survive in extreme heat, they also have an acute sense of smell and hearing which helps them locate food.

Amal is on location at the Ross Park Zoo in their Wonders of Nature Building, next to the Cougar exhibit.

The Zoo Hours are Saturdays and Sundays from 11am to 3pm through Sunday November 29, 2020.
