This Friday, May 2, SUNY Broome Community College will host its 10th annual mock disaster drill, designed to give students in medical and emergency services programs a hands-on opportunity to prepare for real-life emergencies.

The event, a critical part of the College’s training, will simulate a disaster scenario where students will be tasked with responding to the situation, providing them with a realistic and immersive learning experience.

A Realistic and Immersive Scenario

The drill will take place at approximately 2 p.m. and will feature sirens, emergency vehicles, and other elements designed to mimic an actual emergency response.

Students will be faced with a controlled but unpredictable disaster scenario, with specific details about the situation remaining concealed until the drill begins. This element of surprise is intended to prepare students for the uncertainty they may face in real-world emergencies.

Rain or Shine: A Crucial Learning Experience

Regardless of the weather, the drill will go on as planned, providing an invaluable opportunity for students to practice their skills under pressure. “This is a chance for students to get experience in a simulated environment that’s as close to the real thing as possible,” said a representative from the College. “It’s about building confidence and competence for the next generation of emergency responders.”

Community Awareness: No Need to Panic

SUNY Broome is encouraging the community to be aware that the upcoming mock disaster drill on May 2 is a planned exercise, not a real emergency.
