New York Ranks High in Stress And Your Teeth Might Be Paying the Price
The creator of the hit show Squid Game recently shared that he lost eight or nine teeth while filming the series. That may sound extreme, but one dentist says it is not as rare as you might think. Dr. Elizabeth Walton is warning people that stress can quietly harm your teeth.
Stress Can Wreck Your Smile
Stress does more than just make you feel tense. It affects your entire body, and your teeth often suffer the most. People dealing with constant stress may not notice they are grinding their teeth, skipping brushings, or eating unhealthy foods. Over time, that can lead to real damage.
What Stress Does to Your Mouth
When you are stressed, your body produces more of a hormone called cortisol. That can dry out your mouth and weaken your immune system. It can also lead to clenching your jaw or grinding your teeth while you sleep. On top of that, many people turn to sugary snacks and drinks when they are feeling anxious or overwhelmed.
New York Is One of the More Stressed States
Data shows that New York ranks as the 20th most stressed state in the country, with a stress score of 45 out of 100. New Yorkers rank 3rd in family-related stress, 21st in work stress, and 35th in money stress. People in the Empire State are carrying a heavy load, and their teeth could be suffering for it.
Do Not Skip the Dentist
Even if you are busy, do not put off going to the dentist. Regular checkups can catch problems before they get worse. Your dentist can spot the early signs of stress on your teeth like cracks, worn-down spots, or gum problems. It is easier to treat these things early than to wait until they become painful or expensive.
What You Can Do Right Now
Take small steps to protect your mouth during stressful times. Try to brush and floss every day, drink lots of water, and stay away from too much sugar. If you grind your teeth at night, ask your dentist about a night guard. Take care of your stress in healthy ways like a short walk or reading your Bible.
Your Teeth Deserve Some TLC Too
Stress affects more than your mood. It can show up in your mouth before you notice anything is wrong. In a high-energy place like New York, it is easy to overlook dental health. But taking care of your smile should be part of your self care routine.

So the next time life feels overwhelming, take a moment to breathe and schedule a dental check-up. Your teeth will thank you. To see how other states did when it comes to stress, go here.
