New York NFL Teams Have Given Up Thousands of Yards in Penalties

The NFL preseason kicks off on Thursday, August 13th and before you know it, they'll be kicking it off for real. While we wait, let's look back. New analysis shows New York’s NFL teams have lost a huge amount of field position because of penalties over the last 10 years.

The Bills Lost the Most Yards

The numbers looked at the Buffalo Bills, New York Jets, and New York Giants and found that all three teams gave away thousands of yards through penalties. Of the three New York teams, the Buffalo Bills lost the most yards to penalties over the past decade.

The analysis says Buffalo gave up 6,097 yards on 735 penalties.That is equal to more than 60 football fields. The player tied to the most penalty yards for the Bills was Dion Dawkins, who was charged with 60 penalties for 471 yards lost.

The Jets Were Not Far Behind

The New York Jets also gave up a major amount of yardage. Over the last 10 years, the Jets lost 5,769 yards on 654 penalties. That works out to nearly 58 football fields. Buster Skrine led the team in penalty yards lost with 382 yards on 33 penalties.

The Giants Also Paid a Big Price

The New York Giants had the lowest total of the three teams, but the number was still high. The Giants lost 4,703 yards on 526 penalties in the last decade. That is equal to nearly 47 football fields. Janoris Jenkins was listed as the team’s top penalty yardage offender with 249 yards lost on 21 penalties.

Penalties do more than move a team backward on the field. They kill drives, extend possessions for the other team, and change the momentum of a game. For New York football fans, this is a reminder that penalties have been an issue for all three teams. Every team gets flagged, but these numbers show how much those mistakes have hurt the Bills, Jets, and Giants over the last decade.
