Spectators Now Allowed at Broome "Higher Risk" Sporting Events

Broome County school officials are being given the option of permitting spectators at so-called "higher-risk" sporting competitions.

County Executive Jason Garnar on Monday announced the decision to allow spectators to attend events that had been off-limits because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

New York state has permitted the resumption of higher-risk sports since February 1 if local health officials gave their approval.

Initially, Broome County allowed the events to resume with no spectators.

Garnar said spectators now will be permitted, subject to some restrictions. School district or recreational leagues must have included in their plans how they will comply with state guidelines.

No more than two spectators per home student-athlete will be allowed.

Plans must include an enforcement protocol for social distancing among spectators.

Individual school districts will be able to decide whether to allow spectators at their events.
