In this day and age where so much is becoming a video and more and more people are tuning into audio such as podcasts, where does that leave the art of reading? Did many of us leave the joy of reading when we left school?

I have to admit, the further I am from my school years, the less you would find my nose in a book. Sure if it's full of pictures, maybe, but to sit down and read a basic word-only book, be it fiction, non-fiction, or whatever, that would not be me.

If a movie is made out of a story originally from a book, depending on the subject, I'll pick the movie over reading. Maybe it's just that I don't have the time to read, or my mind wanders too much and I can't keep concentrating on the words written in a book.

But, hopefully, I am in the minority and the desire for books never goes away. According to the website Statista, in 2020, 72 percent of adults in the United States had read at least one book during the year. A survey shows that in 2021, 23 percent read an audiobook and 65 percent claimed to have read a print book according to Statista. The average amount of reading time per day in the year 2020, was just over 20 minutes. That's less time than I would have thought.

So, according to those statistics, it seems reading books is alive and healthy. And we thought it might be a good idea to give you a few books to check out from authors who hail from the Southern Tier of New York. Check them out. You just may find your newest favorite book and author.

Thanks to our intern Betsy Warner for her time researching these books from local authors.
