Sheriff’s Deputy Hurt in Struggle with Port Crane Man

A Broome County man wanted on a felony warrant faces several charges after a pursuit and struggle with sheriff's deputies.

Authorities say 35-year-old Clifford Whitman of Port Crane was charged with second-degree assault and resisting arrest.

According to the Broome County Sheriff's Office, deputies were sent to investigate a disturbance on Hancock Road in the town of Colesville around 9 p.m. Sunday.

Whitman was said to have been involved in the dispute. He fled after deputies learned he was wanted on an active felony warrant that had been issued in Susquehanna County.

Deputies pursued the man through a wooded area for a quarter-mile. A deputy used a Taser device but Whitman resisted.

During the struggle, Whitman allegedly tried to take the deputy's Taser weapon. One deputy sustained minor injuries in the incident.

In addition to the assault and resisting arrest counts, Whitman was charged with fugitive from justice, endangering the welfare of a child and obstructing governmental administration.
