There Is One Thing That You Should NEVER Put On Chocolate Cake
In my mind, when it comes to cake, chocolate cake takes the cake...every time. I was disappointed when Traci informed me that chocolate cake was one of her least favorite things in the entire world. Then I remembered that meant more for me.
Recently, we were asking our listeners, "what their favorite comfort food was." I have two favorites: Critter Casserole and Chocolate Cake. No, not mixed together but separately.
The One Thing That You Should NEVER Put On A Chocolate Cake
That would taste awful but you know what would taste worse? Chocolate cake with sauerkraut. I was confused at first because I thought they meant that the sauerkraut was spread on top like frosting.
I was wrong because you put the sauerkraut into the mix when preparing it. UGH! At least, if it was used as a topping, I could scrape it off and put on the good stuff. Traci said "chocolate cake with sauerkraut is actually really good."
Sauerkraut Cake Recipe
Here's the recipe if you want to try it for yourself. If you decide to make it, Traci would love to try it. In my mind sauerkraut DOES NOT BELONG ON CHOCOLATE CAKE. How about you?
National Chocolate Cake Day was on January 27th, and I celebrated by making a cake. If making a cake means that I made myself go to the store and buy one off the "Oops, We Baked Too Much! Reduced Bakery Items" rack. My strength in baking is buying it and letting the professionals actually make it.
This way I can enjoy my cake and eat it too...at a reduced price. With inflation, every little bit helps. Apparently sauerkraut cake became popular in the 1960's because of a USDA Surplus Committee’s request (to school lunchroom managers) for ideas to use up a large quantity of stockpiled canned sauerkraut. No wonder we hated school lunches so.
Where Did Chocolate Cake Come From
Chocolate came on the scene in 1764 when Dr. James Baker made chocolate by grinding cocoa beans between 2 large circular millstones. That's a discover that I can embrace and eat at the same time.
O. Duff and Sons created the first boxed cake mix in the 20's and in 1947, General Mills gave us the first "just add water" Betty Crocker cake mixes. The chocolate cake mix wasn't one of the choices.
You had your choice of Ginger, Spice, Yellow and White. Chocolate cake mix became an option the next year and the rest as they say is history. In the words of Queen Marie Antoinette: "LET THEM EAT CAKE."
Name This Caption: Me: "Sorry that I broke the cake, I guess I'll have to eat it since it's broken."
