Your home is a place where you feel safe, so shouldn’t your hometown make you feel safe, too?

The Binghamton Police Department is participating with several neighborhood groups in putting together the National Night Out to be held this evening, August 5th.

National Night Out, an event created by the National Association of Town Watch (NATW) in 1984, is now celebrated by over 37.8 million people and 16,124 communities from all fifty states, U.S. Territories, military bases, and even Canadian cities worldwide.

Promoting anti-crime awareness and support within the community, National Night Out creates a sense of neighborhood spirit and builds police-community relationships by hosting entertainment at several city parks and locations. NATW’s original mission in celebrating National Night Out was to send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back, hopefully bringing up a generation of informed and anti-crime youth.

In Binghamton, National Night Out events will be held at Saratoga Apartments from 3pm-5pm, Carlisle Apartments from 4pm-6pm, Columbus Park from 5pm-7pm, Fairview Park from 5pm-8pm, Cheri Lindsey Park from 5pm-9pm, Broome County Library from 5:30pm-7:30pm and the Boys and Girls Club 1pm-4:30pm and then from 6pm-8:30pm.

In Vestal you can look for activities in the Parkway Plaza parking lot across from Target from  6pm-9pm. And if you're in Endicott. Endicott's Night Out will be held on the village municipal grounds from 5pm-8pm.

Events tonight will include block parties, demonstrations, cookouts and meet-and-greets between residents and law enforcement officials as well as emergency responders.

Here at The Hawk we’re all about celebrating the Binghamton area and encouraging further growth in the Southern Tier. We might seem like a bunch of small-towners with a hankering for some Hank Williams, but we know that country music represents a spirit of community, and in celebrating the upcoming National Night Out event, we hope you can help us contribute to that mission as well!
