There seems to be so much negativity in the news about police around the country and I don't know about you, but I think that it's time we start highlighting some of the good, virtually unspoken things.

Back in 1998, a sweet little 5-year-old girl named Josi Aponte almost lost her life in an apartment fire, but thanks to the quick thinking and actions of police officer, Peter Getz, her life was spared.

But that day 18 years ago wouldn't be the last time that Officer Getz would be there for Aponte. As a matter of fact, he was recently there for her, but this time it was to watch her walk across the stage and receive her college diploma.

Aponte graduated from Eastern Connecticut State University and she knows it wouldn't have been possible if Officer Getz, who she calls her guardian angel, hadn't saved her life.

What happened on June 25th, 1998 is something Officer Getz will never forget. He arrived at the scene of an apartment fire when a firefighter handed a little girl to him. She wasn't breathing and Officer Getz knew that there just wasn't time to wait for an ambulance. He carefully put her in the back of his patrol car, and while his partner rushed them to the hospital, he performed CPR on the girl. By the time they arrived at the hospital, Aponte was breathing and doctors told Officer Getz that if he hadn't had acted as fast as he did, she would have lost her life.

Officer Getz did his best to stay in touch with Aponte, but there was a was a brief amount of time when Aponte's family moved away that the two lost touch. But, they weren't to go very long without contact because Aponte reached out to Officer Getz again and invited him to witness a monumental part of her life.

Officer Getz says, "It’s one of those things that touches your heart and stays with you." The firemen did their job, I did my job, the hospital staff did their job. As a result, we still have a beautiful young woman still on the face of the earth."
