Owego Apalachin School Budget Vote Again

It’s decision day again for residents in the Owego Apalachin School District.  Voters head to the polls from noon to 8 p.m. June 18 for a second vote on a school budget, this one trimmed back from the proposal that failed at the end of May.

The new proposal increases the tax levy 2.8% instead of three-point-eight percent.  It cuts about $170,000 from the original $47.9 million budget.  Both proposed spending plans fall within the New York State cap on property tax increases.

If the second proposal also fails, the district would have to implement a contingency budget that would fund only teacher salaries and bare basic expenses, cutting extracurricular activities and other programs in the district. The contingency would have zero tax levy impact.

The polling is at the Apalachin Elementary School and the Owego Apalachin Middle School since Regents testing is going on at the high school.
