Talk about poking at a hornet’s nest. I recently got bombarded by family and friends emphatically asking me if I’d heard that New York State is banning RVs and then pelting me with questions about what they were supposed to do with the RVs they already own.

Where in the world did these RVs being banned rumors originate? That’s a silly question – it was social media. And this is why it’s best to always source-check everything and don’t just take what you’ve read on the internet as the entire truth when it might only be a partial truth.

These inaccurate posts on social media (which were then spread around like wildfire) are tossing out two different claims. The first is that you won’t be able to purchase an RV in six different states beginning in 2025. These states are California, New York, New Jersey, Oregon, Massachusetts, and Washington. The second claim is that not only will RV sales discontinue in those states, but that RVs will be banned in the same six states.

Both claims are inaccurate.

If you have an RV, you’ll still be welcome to visit the six states and drive your RV within them - they're not going to stop you at the state border and tell you to take yourself and your RV elsewhere. HOWEVER, what’s changing is that each of the six states is setting rules to reduce pollution by making sure more vehicles sold in the future are eco-friendly.

RVs, like motorhomes and campers, are used for traveling and living temporarily. The new rule in each of the states is to try to make sure that a higher percentage of vehicles sold are eco-friendly over the next decade. This doesn't mean RVs are being banned; it just means that manufacturers need to sell more eco-friendly vehicles to meet these new standards.

Now, there is another side and this is probably where people are getting confused.  If manufacturers don't follow the new rules, they might have to stop selling RVs in each of the six states because they won't have the necessary parts to make traditional RVs that run on gas. Instead, some manufacturers are looking into making electric or hybrid RVs to meet the new regulations.

Existing RV owners don't have to worry though. The new rules only affect the sale of new RV models, not the ones people already own.  It's important to understand the difference between these new rules to protect the environment and false claims about a complete ban on RV sales.
