New York’s Tuition Assistance Program Opens Doors to Affordable Education

The application process for the New York State Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) for the 2024-2025 school year is open.

The TAP is a need-based financial aid grant program available to all full-time and part-time students studying at an approved postsecondary institution in New York.

Since its inception in 1974, TAP has provided nearly $30 billion in financial support to over six million New York students. In the 2020-21 school year alone, over 250,000 students received more than $700 million in tuition assistance through TAP.

The maximum TAP award is $5,665, making it a crucial financial support system for students who might not otherwise be able to afford a college education. The opening of TAP applications allows students to get a head start on the financial aid process and apply for assistance before the release of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

Governor Hochul has praised TAP for its role in helping low-income and first-generation college students achieve academic success and access quality higher education. The program's 50th anniversary marks a significant milestone in expanding educational opportunities and promoting socioeconomic mobility in the state.

The 2024-2025 TAP application is open to new and returning students entering college in the fall of 2024. Eligible students can apply through the HESC website, and applications will be accepted until June 2025. Those eligible under the Senator Jos Peralta New York State DREAM Act can also apply for TAP.
