Think NY Drivers Are the Worst? Study Just Proved Everyone Wrong
Between the endless traffic, constant construction, and those daily close calls that make your blood boil, "safe" probably isn’t the first word that comes to mind when you think about driving in New York State.
Whether you're dodging potholes on the highway or white-knuckling it through a chaotic intersection, it usually feels like we have some of the most stressful roads in America.
But this study might completely change how you view your daily commute.
New York Ranks Fourth-Safest for Fatal Crashes
According to a deep-dive analysis of crash data, New York is the fourth-safest state in the country for fatal motor vehicle crashes.
The benchmark researchers used was the number of fatal crashes per 100,000 registered vehicles. New York blew most of the country away, recording just 2.88 fatal crashes per 100,000 vehicles.
Low Fatality Rate Despite Heavy Traffic
Let’s be real: keeping that number low is a lot easier in states where you can drive for miles without seeing another soul. But most of New York state is packed.
With an estimated 9 to 9.5 million registered vehicles on our roads, we have one of the highest traffic volumes in the entire nation. Yet, despite the bumper-to-bumper gridlock and the aggressive lane-changers, our fatal crash rate sits lower than almost every other state, even in places with a fraction of our population.
Fatal Crash Numbers Continue to Decline
While every single accident represents a tragedy and a family changed forever, the overall trend line across the Empire State is actually moving in the right direction.
After a brief post-pandemic spike in 2021, the total number of fatal crashes across the state has steadily dropped year over year.
- 2021: 380 fatal crashes
- 2022: 367 fatal crashes
- 2023: 354 fatal crashes
- 2024: 337 fatal crashes
Comparing New York to Other States
If you think driving here is terrifying, the data suggests taking a trip down South or out West might really test your nerves.
According to the report, Mississippi landed the top spot as the most dangerous state in the nation, checking in with a massive 10.88 fatal crashes per 100,000 vehicles. That means a driver there is nearly four times more likely to be involved in a fatal wreck than someone driving in New York.

Key Reasons for New York’s Road Safety
There isn’t a single silver bullet that explains the ranking. However, experts point to a few distinct factors keeping us safe.
Strict Traffic Enforcement: New York has some of the toughest cell phone, seat belt, and impaired driving laws in the country, and police actively enforce them.
The Gridlock Defense? It sounds funny, but heavy congestion naturally forces traffic to slow down. Fenders get bent, but high-speed, catastrophic impacts are less frequent when nobody can move past 35 MPH.
Robust Public Transit: With millions of New Yorkers using trains and buses daily, a massive chunk of high-risk commuters aren't putting keys in an ignition in the first place.
