Binghamton Man Faces Federal Child Pornography Charges

A 24-year-old Binghamton man is facing federal charges after a grand jury indicted him on counts of allegedly distributing and possessing child pornography.

Thomas Murray was arraigned on June 22 before U.S. Magistrate Judge Miroslav Lovric on charges tied to material allegedly found during a search of his home. He remains in state custody while the federal case moves forward, with a trial date to be set before U.S. District Court Judge Anthony J. Brindisi.

Allegations In The Thomas Murray Federal Indictment

Federal prosecutors allege Murray shared child pornography through an online messaging platform on two occasions in June 2024. The indictment also alleges he possessed the material on two separate electronic devices.

Investigators traced the case back to a tip submitted by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. That tip led New York State Police to search Murray's residence in April 2025, where authorities say they recovered the material named in the indictment.

Agencies Involved In The Binghamton Investigation

The case was announced jointly by First Assistant U.S. Attorney John A. Sarcone III, FBI Albany Special Agent in Charge Craig L. Tremaroli, and New York State Police Superintendent Steven G. James. All three pointed to the coordination between federal, state, and nonprofit partners as central to the arrest.

The FBI led the investigation with support from New York State Police. Assistant U.S. Attorney Kevin Cheung is prosecuting the case through Project Safe Childhood, a Department of Justice initiative aimed at reducing child sexual exploitation through coordinated federal and local enforcement.

Federal Penalties Murray Could Face If Convicted

Murray faces a mandatory minimum of five years in federal prison on the distribution charge alone, with a maximum of 20 years combined for both counts. He could also face a fine of up to $250,000 and a supervised release term ranging from five years to life. A conviction would require him to register as a sex offender.
