As the cost of living rises and remote work options become more flexible, many New Yorkers have opted to live in far more affordable areas.

Where New Yorkers Are Moving To

In 2022, Florida emerged as the top choice for New Yorkers looking for a fresh start with 91,201 residents relocating to the Sunshine State. Its sunny climate, lower cost of living, and attractive lifestyle are irresistible to many. Following close behind, New Jersey witnessed a significant influx of 75,103 former New Yorkers, drawn by its proximity and slightly more affordable living conditions. Other neighboring states that experienced an influx of New Yorkers include Connecticut (50,670) and Pennsylvania (44,807).

However, not all states were as fortunate in attracting New York transplants. Wyoming, Montana, Iowa, Mississippi, and South Dakota saw fewer than 500 residents crossing their borders from the Empire State in 2022. The allure of these destinations definitely paled in comparison to the opportunities and amenities offered by other states.

Why New York Residents Are Leaving the State

Several factors contributed to the decision of New Yorkers to make a fresh start elsewhere. A survey conducted by Home Bay revealed that the top reasons for relocation were improving quality of life, living in more affordable areas, and being able to afford more spacious homes. Approximately 25% of respondents stated that quality of life was their primary deciding factor for packing up and leaving as they sought a better balance between work, personal life, and overall well-being.

As the cost of living in New York continues to rise, many residents find themselves burdened by the high expenses associated with housing, food, and other essentials. Inflation has intensified these financial concerns, causing residents to find more cost-effective living situations elsewhere.

Additionally, the COVID-19 pandemic and the rise of remote work have proven to many that location is no longer a limiting factor for many job opportunities. As a result, New Yorkers are relocating to areas with lower living costs, where the dollar stretches further, enabling them to enjoy a higher quality of life.
