If you live in New York State and are planning something special for Valentine’s Day, you might notice it feels more expensive than it used to. New research compared 2016 to 2026 and it showed that some gift trends have changed, but the biggest difference is how much people are spending.

What People Are Buying In 2026

Today’s most common Valentine’s gifts include a greeting card, chocolates, diamond earrings, roses, and dinner for two. That celebration runs around $774, which is more than $260 higher than the same Valentine’s package would have cost ten years ago.

What Was Popular Back In 2016

In 2016, the top gifts included champagne instead of a greeting card. Chocolates, diamond earrings, roses, dinner for two, and a bottle of champagne together was just over $510. Even though some gifts stayed the same, the total price has climbed a lot.

Biggest Price Increases

Some items saw large jumps. Chocolates had one of the biggest increases, more than tripling in price over the decade. Dinner for two also shot up, more than doubling compared to 2016. It probably doesn't help that it falls on a Saturday this year.

Small Change In Gift Choices

One interesting change is the swap from champagne to greeting cards. Cards are much cheaper than champagne, which suggests people may be trying to save money where they can. However, the overall costs continue to rise.

What This Means For New Yorkers

Whether you celebrate Valentine’s Day big or try and keep it simple, rising prices are a factor across New York. The good news is that meaningful celebrations don't have to be expensive. Doing something thoughtful can matter more than the price tag.
