New York Ranked Among America’s Safest States For Senior Fall Deaths
New analysis has found that New York has one of the lowest senior fall death rates in the country. New York ranked seventh safest nationwide for fatal falls involving older adults.
New York’s Fall Death Rate Was Well Below National Average
Researchers found New York recorded 49.27 senior fall deaths per 100,000 older adults each year. That was nearly 37% lower than the national average of 77.83 deaths per 100,000 seniors.
Thousands Of New York Seniors Still Die From Falls
Even with one of the lower rates in America, falls remain a serious concern for older adults across New York. Researchers found about 8,700 seniors died from falls in New York over a five year period. That averages around 1,740 deaths every year. Health experts say falls remain one of the leading causes of injury and death for older Americans.
Several Northeast States Ranked Safest
The study found Delaware had the lowest senior fall fatality rate in the nation. Other states ranking ahead of New York included New Jersey, California, Louisiana, and Georgia. Researchers said factors like healthcare access, home safety measures, and fall prevention programs may help lower risks for seniors.

Experts Encourage Fall Prevention At Home
Health officials say little changes can greatly reduce fall risks for older adults. Recommendations often include improving lighting, removing tripping hazards, installing grab bars, staying physically active, and getting regular vision checks. Experts say while New York performed better than much of the country, fall prevention remains critical as the state’s senior population continues to grow.
