New York Ranked Among the Tougher States for Giving Birth
A new report says New York is one of the harder states in the country when it comes to the overall toll of having a baby. The study ranked New York as the 14th worst state in the U.S. based on birth costs, maternity leave rules, and maternal health outcomes.
Paid Leave Helps, But It Does Not Fix Everything
The report notes that New York does require employers to provide paid maternity leave. That gives parents in New York more support than in many other states where paid leave is not required.
Even with that protection, New York still ranked bad overall because of the combined financial and health burden tied to childbirth. According to the report, the average cost of giving birth in New York is $31,345.
Maternal Health Is Also Part of the Picture
The study also looked at maternal mortality rates. In New York, the report listed 22 maternal deaths per 100,000 births. That number, along with the high cost of birth, played a part in where the state landed on the list.

New York’s Score Put It Near the Hardest States
New York got a score of 39.71 out of 100 in the report. Lower scores mean a heavier overall burden on parents, so that put New York among the states where giving birth can be more difficult.
What This Means for Families in New York
Even with paid maternity leave requirements, the cost of childbirth and the health risks can still create a major burden. For people planning to grow their family in New York State, those challenges are a very real part of the conversation.
