July Was An All-Time Wet One For The Southern Tier, NWS Says

Wow, we've certainly had our fill of nasty weather this season, more so during the month of July. Rainfall in the Binghamton area and beyond has been crazy, and I don't mean that in a good way.

According to the National Weather service Facebook page, we've had the wettest July ever recorded at the Binghamton Airport. And we've got a week left in the month to add to it. The Binghamton National Weather Service reported that as of 5pm on July 21st, the rainfall amount has totaled 8.47 inches.

Is the summer season trying to mirror the winter season with inclement weather? It certainly seems so. How many severe thunderstorms watches and warnings have we gone through so far this season? More than I prefer for sure.

Speaking of severe thunderstorms, there will soon be new warning categories that you may see on any weather alerts you get from the National Weather Service. Beginning August 2nd, they will add a “Damage Threat” tag. This will be for Severe Thunderstorm Warnings that the NWS says is similar to Tornado and Flash Flood Warnings.

The Damage Threat tags will be in three categories - "Destructive" and "Considerable", and "Base" damage threats in terms of severity. The categories will be assigned according to sizes of hail and thunderstorm winds.

It makes sense, and I think that we will all be better informed about the severity of a severe thunderstorm, since not all are the same as far as destructive impact similar to a tornado or flash flood warning, according to the National Weather Service.
