Mosquitoes Are Ruining Summer Fun for Many New Yorkers
Summer in New York means backyard cookouts, family gatherings, gardening, and relaxing outside. But for many people, one tiny pest is making those plans a lot less enjoyable.

A new survey from Modern Pest Services found that backyards are the place that Americans like to spend time in the summer. Over 70% of people said they have backyard parties or barbecues planned, while 61% expect to spend time gardening or doing yard work.
Backyards Beat Parks and Beaches
The survey found that people plan to spend more time in their own yards than at parks, beaches, or hiking this summer. Whether it's grilling burgers, playing with the kids, gardening, or enjoying a warm evening, outdoors at home is a big part of summer life. This sounds like the perfect way to enjoy the season but mosquitoes may have other plans.
Mosquitoes Are a Major Problem
Nearly half (47%) of people with yards said mosquitoes keep them from really enjoying their outdoor time. Anyone who has tried to sit outside on a warm summer night only to have to go indoors because of the mosquitoes can relate. A few bites can turn a relaxing night into an itchy, frustrating experience.
How People Are Fighting Back
Many Americans are trying different ways to keep mosquitoes away. More than half said they use citronella candles around their yards. Others use natural oils and sprays to help keep the bugs away.
Some homeowners are taking bigger measures. The survey found that 30% use professional mosquito treatments to reduce the number of pests around their property. Another 22% hire professionals to deal with insects such as bees, wasps, and hornets.
Making the Most of Summer
Mosquitoes may be a fact of life during a New York summer, but people are finding ways to keep them from ruining the outdoor fun. With cookouts, and family gatherings on the calendar, we are looking for every way to enjoy their backyards this summer.
