Before my son was born, I started writing letters to him to give to him when he turns various milestone ages. And I also wrote to him because I wanted him to be able to hold my words in his hands should anything ever happen to me, so hearing about this hit really close to home.

For his 30th birthday, ChrisBenRoy man received a special gift he’ll never forget – a birthday card from his dad who did more than a decade ago.

The card was signed, “Love Ya, Dad,” and was written 16 years ago, right before his father lost his battle against cancer.

According to Reddit user nicknamed ChrisBenRoy, when his father knew he’d pass away shortly, he bought and filled out birthday cards for his sons’ milestone birthdays. His dad wanted to be able to send his love throughout his life because he knew he wouldn’t be there in person. ChrisBenRoy’s Mom held onto the cards and kept them safe.

ChrisBenRoy said he was thrilled to get the card. “The card totally caught me off guard and made me so very happy. It felt like he was still there, holding something I’d never seen before that he touched, and signed himself; it was if he had just done it yesterday.”

I don’t know about you, but I can’t think of a better birthday gift.
