Since at least the 14th century, macaroni and cheese has been a staple comfort food for people around the world. The first known cookbooks o feature a macaroni and cheese recipe were the Italian cookbook, Liber de Coquina, and the medieval English cookbook, the Forme of Cury.

The first modern known printed recipe for the dish was in Elizabeth Raffald's 1769 book, The Experienced English Housekeeper. In 1793, United States President Thomas Jefferson commissioned the United States ambassador to France to purchase a machine for making macaroni and cheese after falling in love with the recipe on a visit to Paris.

By the 1880s, macaroni and cheese recipes were featured in cookbooks all across the United States and its popularity has only grown in the decades since.
