Oct. 22 is a day designated as "Wear Purple Day" as part of Domestic Violence Awareness Month. These landmarks will be lit up in purple across the state to show support.

Domestic violence is a problem for everyone.  It affects every gender, race, age and many other demographics in our country.  According to the National Domestic Violence Hotline, "Just under 15% of women (14.8%) and 4% of men in the US have been injured as a result of violence that included rape, physical violence and/or stalking by an intimate partner. And 30% to 60% of intimate partner violence perpetrators also abuse children in the household."

October has been designated as Domestic Violence Awareness Month to bring attention to some of these horrible statistics that shouldn't be taken lightly.

In conjunction with Domestic Violence Awareness Month, October 22nd is also designated as "Wear Purple Day" to help bring more awareness to the cause.

Governor Cuomo has also ordered a number of state landmarks to be illuminated in purple tonight to commemorate the day as well.

"With this action, we shine a light on the plague of domestic violence in a show of support for survivors and their families, The unprecedented challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic have increased the sense of isolation faced by survivors, but New York will continue the fight to bring domestic abusers to justice and protect the most vulnerable among us." - Governor Andrew Cuomo

According to WGRZ, the landmarks that will be illuminated are:

  • One World Trade Center;
  • The Mario M. Cuomo Bridge;
  • Kosciuszko Bridge;
  • Alfred E. Smith Building;
  • H. Carl McCall SUNY Building;
