Kmart Using Roving Signs to Publicize Closing

Signs spreading the word of the planned closure of the Binghamton Plaza Kmart store are popping up around the city.

Fixed billboards aren't allowed downtown and in many other sections of Binghamton. But people holding tall signs promoting the Kmart liquidation sale have been dispatched to high-traffic areas around the city.

A woman who was in charge of the bright portable sign at the intersection of Court and State streets said she was getting paid $40 to display the advertisement.

The woman said she learned of the opportunity from a posting on the Craigslist website. She conceded it was a bit boring to be sitting on a wall at a vacant city-owned site at the busy intersection.

The woman said at least three other people with the "Store Closing" signs were assigned to other locations around Binghamton.

Kmart last Friday announced it would close the West State Street store in mid-December. The company would not disclose how many people would lose jobs because of the plan to shut down the Binghamton location.
