On Saturday, April 19, 2025, at approximately 6:46 p.m., the Broome County Sheriff’s Office responded to a one-car accident on Interstate Route 88 East, near Exit 3 (Port Crane).

The crash resulted in a juvenile driver and a juvenile passenger being involved in a serious accident.

Driver and Passenger Found in Critical Condition
Upon arrival, a sheriff’s deputy found the passenger of the crashed vehicle conscious and alert, being assisted by a bystander after managing to crawl out of the wreckage.

The deputy then located the vehicle, which had rolled onto its roof and was sitting on an embankment. The driver, also a juvenile, was trapped inside the vehicle.

Heroic Rescue by Deputy
Acting quickly, the deputy used his pocketknife to cut the driver’s seat belt, successfully pulling the trapped driver from the wreckage just as emergency medical staff arrived.

Both the driver and the passenger were then transported to UHS Wilson Medical Center to be treated for their injuries.

Initial Investigation and Traffic Violations
The initial investigation indicates that the juvenile driver was operating the vehicle recklessly at a high rate of speed before crashing into the right side of the embankment near Exit 3 on I-88 Eastbound. Several traffic violations were issued to the driver, but the investigation is still ongoing.

Assistance from Multiple Agencies
The Broome County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by New York State Police, the NYS Department of Transportation, and several local fire and ambulance departments, including Kirkwood Fire, Broome Ambulance, Chenango Bridge Fire Department, Port Crane Fire Department, Vestal Fire Department, and Chenango Ambulance.
