The Broome County Health Department has allowed a 99-room hotel in Johnson City to reopen after the place was directed to shut down.

The SureStay Plus Hotel by Best Western on Harry L Drive was ordered closed on October 26. The four-story building is located just east of the Oakdale Mall.

After thousands of dollars in repair work, the establishment was given permission to resume operations.

Broome County Health Department director Mary McFadden on Wednesday confirmed that the business was given authorization to reopen.

The hotel was shut down after a large water line broke. The cost of repairing the line had been estimated at $60,000.

Johnson City fire marshal Bob Blakeslee said village inspectors worked with county health department representatives to monitor the necessary work at the hotel as it was being done in recent months.

Blakeslee said inspectors made several visits to the building. Because of the broken water line, the sprinkler system was inoperative. Some of the emergency "smoke doors" in the building weren't closing correctly and emergency lighting was working properly.

Blakeslee said the hotel checked "room to room" to ensure it met all code and safety regulations. He said plumbing and electrical repairs were made, along with work on the building's elevators.

Property records show the hotel is owned by JSK Lakes LLC. Representatives of the owners could not be located.
