Construction has started for the next phase of the rail trail system in the town of Vestal.

The east section of the walking and biking path is being extended along Vestal Road to an area behind the Town Square Mall.

Town engineer Vernon Myers has said this phase will add 3,500 feet to the trail system.

Hurd Development of Endwell was awarded a $1.3 million contract for the work in March.

Company owner Marshall Hurd said construction work on the trail expansion started on May 12.

An enhanced parking lot is being built at Vestal and African roads to serve as an access point to the trail. Pedestrian crossings will be added at the intersection to make it easier for people to walk to Harold Moore Park just north of the trail.

Construction operations now underway are at the west end of the trail extension with drainage work being performed and preparations for asphalt.

Motorists who travel east on Vestal Road can look forward to a new right-turn lane at the Sycamore Road intersection.

Preliminary work at the project site started early last year when town highway department crews cleared trees along the path of the planned trail.

Hurd said he expects the extension will be ready for use by late summer or early fall.
