United Way of Broome Hosts Day(s) of Caring

The United Way of Broome County is celebrating its annual Day of Caring events September 9 and September 10 throughout the county.

Volunteers have signed on to be working on over 40 projects ranging from general clean up to landscaping and painting at local charitable and not-for-profit organizations.

The Day of Caring volunteer projects provide support needed for agencies to get jobs done that many just don’t have the resources, whether it be monetary or physical labor, to accomplish on their own.

The volunteers working on the projects starting at around 9 a.m. September 9 come from local businesses and offer their time and talents to help.

The United Way say over 500 volunteers from area businesses and organizations are participating across the county.

The Day of Caring has been a local tradition since 2002. It was originally conceived as a remembrance to those who lost their lives during the terrorist attacks on the United States in 2001.  That date was actually supposed to be the launch of the United Way’s annual community campaign fund drive, which was cancelled when the events of the day unfolded.

The Day of Caring gives residents a chance for community engagement and honors the many local heroes that emerged from what is now commonly called nine-eleven.

Some of the locations for Day of Caring Events this year include: Chenango Valley State Park, the Girl Scout Camp Amahami in Deposit, Kopernik Observatory, the Phelps Mansion, Ross Park Zoo, Roberson Museum and Endwell United Methodist Church, Action for Older Persons, the Fenton Free Library, the Police Athletic League of Binghamton (P.A.L) Camp, Tri Cities Opera, VINES, YMCA of Broome County and Johnson City Senior Center.
