A chill in the air has New York State Transportation officials, thinking about what lies ahead as they look to hire dozens of workers in the Southern Tier.

The DOT says applications are currently being taken for 63 full-time job positions in the Southern Tier and Binghamton area alone in advance of the upcoming snow and ice season.

The Department of Transportation is hoping to find individuals “looking for rewarding careers keeping Southern Tier Motorists Safe” as it looks to fill dozens of positions ranging from plow drivers to administration positions.

In a news release issued by the D.O.T., fleet technicians and highway maintenance workers are being hired across the different regions in the state. Openings include both permanent and seasonal jobs with a total of 617 openings across New York State.

A candidate must be at least 18 years old and pass a physical and drug test.

Some of the jobs require a valid, clean Class A or B commercial driver license but the D.O.T. says interested drivers should not pass by the opportunity if they don’t hold a current CDL.  The Department offers in-house CDL training and road tests to obtain the commercial license.

Once hired, new employees will be trained and evaluated on several pieces of essential equipment and are expected to perform productive work while gaining experience. Shifts may vary depending on location.

More information can be found by stopping by a local Department of Transportation residence or Regional Fleet shop.  Information is also posted on the NYSDOT website: ny.gov/dotjobs and on the D.O.T.’s Facebook page.

The D.O.T. is also launching a new billboard campaign to promote employment opportunities.
