Grocery Store Opens at Bank Site on Endicott’s Washington Avenue

A year-and-a-half after Citizens Bank closed its Washington Avenue branch, the Endicott building has been transformed into a grocery store.

Deshi Halal Bazar has opened at 18 Washington Avenue. The business is located south of North Street near the Huron Campus.

The building had been used as a bank for several decades. Citizens Bank shut down its office in September 2021 to move its Endicott operations to a smaller site a short distance away.

The Washington Avenue property was acquired by a Sullivan County entity. Bismillah Brothers LLC of Roscoe paid $189,000 to buy the building last September.

The partners involved in the new grocery store project had expected to open the business last fall. But the process of obtaining necessary permits and renovating the building took longer than expected.

The developers said the store would provide Indian and Pakistani food items that aren't readily available in the Endicott area. In addition to halal meat, the store stocks vegetables and fresh fish.

The store will operate seven days a week.
