Major construction work has been completed on the new Binghamton Fire Department headquarters complex.

The 20,000-square-foot facility is located between Court and Pine streets. The site is just east of Chapman Street and west of North Shore Drive.

Buildings at 235 Court Street and 80 Pine Street were demolished in September 2020 to clear the property for the fire station project.

Binghamton's main fire station had been located on State Street in the City Hall complex for nearly 50 years. Structural deterioration with the garage that housed heavy fire equipment prompted city officials to develop plans for a new facility.

The fire department's temporary headquarters is situated in an old car dealership building at Court and Carroll streets.

About 20 workers were busy at the new facility on Thursday tending to some of the finishing touches. Additional flooring still must be installed inside the complex.

Although there is some power to the building now, the main electrical breakers have yet to be installed. Work has been held up because of delayed equipment deliveries.

The new station has bays for five vehicles and a bunking area for 11 firefighters. The facility also includes a kitchen and dining area as well as a decontamination room.

FAHS Construction Group of Broome County is the project's general contractor.
