
Latest Study on Car Theft Rates is Not Good News for New Yorkers
Car thefts continue to rise throughout the country, and New York State is among the top 10 states in the United States for car theft.
According to the National Insurance Crime Bureau, the USA continues to be plagued by near-record levels of vehicle thefts. In the first six months of 2023, almost 500,000 vehicles were reported stolen. That's a lot of vehicles.
New York State Among Worst In The Country For Vehicle Thefts
During those six months, the NICB reports that New York State ranked second when it comes to an increase in vehicle thefts at 20 percent, eclipsed only by Illinois with a 38 percent increase in vehicle thefts.
Of the top 10 states with the most vehicle thefts in the country for the first half of 2023, New York State lands at number 7. California, Texas, Florida, Washington, Illinois, and Colorado are the only states with more thefts than the Empire State.
Highest Vehicle Theft Areas In Binghamton
How about closer to home? Vehicle theft per capita in downtown Binghamton is highlighted on a map from the Chrime Grade website. Crime grades are listed throughout the downtown area as A+, C, and F. You can figure out what they stand for.
The Crime Grade website map displays vehicle theft per 1,000 Downtown Binghamton residents. The worst areas appear to be around the State Street area, from Depot Street to Truesdell Street from south to north and Chenango Street to the Chenango River from west to east.
A similar area is from the confluence of the Chenango and Susquehanna Rivers to the area where Susquehanna Street and North Shore Drive meet. Widening out the map, those two areas are the worst compared to any other areas in the Triple Cities.
Crime Grade notes that the rate of vehicle theft in Binghamton is 0.2599 per 1,000 residents during a standard year.
Your chance of being a victim of vehicle theft in Downtown Binghamton may be as high as 1 in 2,198 in the south neighborhoods, or as low as 1 in 6,513 in the northwest part of the neighborhood. - Crime Grade
Thieves Target These Vehicles The Most In New York State
CBS New York reports that in New York State, according to the National Insurance Crime Bureau, the most targeted vehicle in 2022 was the 2021 Honda CR-V, followed by the 2021 Honda Accord, 2019 Honda Civic, 2016 Toyota Camry and tied for fifth, the 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee and 2020 Nissan Altima.
