Workers from Binghamton University have begun preparing a recently-acquired office complex for future use by the school.

University officials have been mum about specific plans for the property just purchased from Columbian Mutual Life Insurance Company.

The company moved its headquarters offices from Main Street in Binghamton to the Vestal Parkway in 1960. An addition to the original building was completed in 1960.

The abandoned building and associated parcels on the parkway at Clubhouse Road were sold to Binghamton University for $5.5 million. Most of the property is in the town of Vestal but a small parcel involved in the transaction is in the city of Binghamton.

The actual uses for the four-acre site have yet to be determined.

According to Pipe Dream, a university spokesperson in a statement said the property purchase "represents an exciting opportunity for the University to expand its presence and to design a space that supports our strategic priorities."

The student-run newspaper reported the spokesperson indicated Anne D'Alleva, who became Binghamton University president last month, has called for the creation of "both a Steering Committee and a Planning Committee" to consider options for the site.

The committees are to "work collaboratively to develop recommendations for the building's future use and to engage in the design process."

The spokesperson's statement said the office complex "will be utilized to free up and create additional space for student-centric offices and services on campus."

Employees from the university facilities management department were working inside and outside the office complex Monday. They declined to speak with a reporter.
