Binghamton Power Outage Affects Hundreds of NYSEG Customers
Several hundred residential and business customers in Binghamton lost electric service Friday afternoon.
The downtown power outage started around 2:15 p.m. The trouble was limited to lights flickering in some stores and offices but many places lost their electricity.
According to NYSEG's website, the outage affected 532 customers. There was no information about what caused the trouble.
Power reportedly went out for a time at Binghamton City Hall and at the Broome County Office Building on Hawley Street. A backup generator brought things back to normal after a brief interruption at City Hall.
Police officers were sent to several downtown intersections to direct traffic. The police department reported no other problems linked to the lack of electricity. The fire department also encountered no issues due to the power outage.
The State Street public parking facility lost electricity, leaving three underground levels pitch black. Car owners used cellphone lights to find their parked vehicles.
Sections of Court Street, State Street, Exchange Street, Hawley Street and Pine Street were affected by the outage.
