Binghamton police officers and public works crews showed up at an encampment along the Susquehanna River to disperse people who had been staying at the site.

The encampment west of the Exchange Street Bridge was visible from the 18-story Binghamton State Office Building two blocks away.

The project to clear the site started Wednesday morning. About five people who had been staying at the encampment were there when police and public works department employees arrived.

City councilmember Rebecca Rathmell - who is involved in providing help to Binghamton's homeless population - said the operation began before outreach teams could work to offer assistance to those affected.

One woman who identified herself as Angelina remained at the site near the river Wednesday afternoon. She told WNBF News up to 15 people had been living in the encampment at various times throughout the summer.

Angelina said she had been staying at the location for nearly two years.

Although public works crews filled several trucks with items that were found around the encampment, those who had been living there were permitted to set aside some possessions.
