New York City Ranks Among America’s Safest Summer Destinations
New York City has millions of visitors each year. A new study suggests it is also one of the safer popular places to visit during the summer, at least when it comes to property crime. Vivint studied FBI crime data from 25 popular summer travel destinations. New York City ranked as the eighth-safest destination on the list.
New York City Earns a Low Property Crime Score
New York City got a summer property crime score of 205. That was lower than the several other popular destinations, including Miami, Chicago, San Francisco, Seattle, Philadelphia and Honolulu.
The study looked at crimes reported from June through August 2024. It used the number of crimes per 100,000 residents so cities of different sizes could be compared fairly.
Theft Was the Most Common Property Crime
New York City had 39 burglaries for every 100,000 residents during the summer of 2024. The city also had 520 larcenies and 56 motor vehicle thefts per 100,000 residents. Larceny includes stealing someone’s property without breaking into a building.
Property Crime Has Increased Since 2022
While New York City ranked among the safer destinations, its summer property crime score has increased by 8% since 2022. The findings cover property crime only. They do not measure violent crime or every safety issue a traveler could face.

Summer Can Bring a Greater Burglary Risk
Across the country, burglaries are 4.7% higher from June through August than during the rest of the year. The Vivint study suggests travelers should lock their vehicles, protect their valuables and make sure their homes are secure before leaving for vacation.
