Township police reportedly saw a car speeding on Sheshequin Road at around 10 p.m. March 22 before the vehicle plunged into the Susquehanna River.

The bodies of 29-year-old Derek Marshall and 1-year-old Maddox were recovered at around 3:15 p.m. March 23.  The child’s mother, Marshall’s girlfriend, Emily Hoey, made it out of the water and was found on the riverbank.

She was treated at an area hospital.

Witnesses said the portion of Sheshequin Road in Afton where the car left the road and drove into the river is especially treacherous and has been the scene of numerous crashes.

Aside from speed, officials have not commented on any other potential contributing factors to the accident.
