Construction is underway for an expanded multi-agency intelligence unit at Binghamton City Hall.

Local law enforcement officials say the facility is expected to open this spring in the space that had been used as fire department headquarters.

Fire operations were moved out of City Hall late last year ahead of construction of a new fire department headquarters building at Court and Chapman streets.

Binghamton police along with other regional and state agencies will utilize the "intelligence center" which will replace an existing smaller facility. The new operation will have an improved layout and much more space for workers who focus on a wide range of criminal activity and threat assessment.

The target date for opening the center is said to be late March.

Mayor Richard David declined to discuss the project during a recent radio interview. Speaking on WNBF's Binghamton Now program, David said an announcement about the project may be made next month.

The mayor said the old bay doors that had been used by the fire department have been removed and new walls are being constructed. He wouldn't discuss the cost of the work.

The floor of the garage area where fire trucks had been parked must be stabilized. City officials had been concern that the floor could collapse because of the heavy weight of the equipment.
