Councilman Joe Burns Announces Candidacy for Binghamton Mayor

Democratic Binghamton City Councilman Joe Burns says he's running for mayor, a post once held by his father.

Burns was elected to council in 2019 to represent the 5th District, which covers part of the city's South Side.

For more than 25 years, Burns worked in the film and television business. In a statement announcing his candidacy, he said: "I was hired to keep complex multi-million dollar productions on budget and on schedule, and I'll use that same leadership experience to move our whole city forward."

Burns said Binghamton's next mayor will have to "oversee the city's recovery from this pandemic, while keeping taxes stable and getting Binghamton back to work and open for business."

Burns is the son of John Burns, who was Binghamton mayor from 1958 to August 1965. His uncle, William Burns, was appointed mayor by city council after his father resigned to become New York State Democratic chairman.

Deputy Mayor Jared Kraham announced his plans to run as the Republican candidate to succeed Richard David, who cannot seek reelection because of term limit rules.
