If someone had warned me in 2019 that in the spring of 2020 I would have trouble finding toilet paper in any store, I would have laughed at the ridiculousness.

Thankfully it seems that the great toilet paper shortage of 2020 is dwindling and we're starting to find things like toilet paper and paper towels in our stores again and at more manageable prices than the inflated prices we were seeing a few months ago.

Seriously, I never thought that I would pay $3 a roll for toilet paper that just a few months before retailed for like, 0.79 cents, but it really is all about supply and demand. I was one of those people who didn't go out and buy a big multi-pack because I thought things were being super hyped and then I ended up scrambling. Lesson learned.

Did you know that the average family goes through 159 rolls of toilet paper a year? I'm guessing the average family will have gone through many more than 159 by the time the end of 2020 rolls around because we've spent more time home this year than any other year which means we're using more of our own toilet paper than that bought by our employers, restaurants, etc.

To put into perspective how much money we spend on toilet paper, you and I could buy a brand new Rolex watch for the amount we'll spend on toilet paper during our lifetime. According to Tushy, the average American spends roughly $182 on toilet paper each year, up an extra $15 month since COVID because of the whole supply and demand business. What that means is that over the course of our lives, you and I will spend roughly $11,198.88 on toilet paper.

If you're looking for a way to cut back on expenses and also be more environmentally aware, there are options other than literally flushing your money away with toilet paper.
