It's going to be a hot and humid weekend in the Southern Tier with an Excessive Heat Warning for the Hawk listening area from 12 p.m today (7/19) til Saturday at 8 p.m. The Heat Index will be in the mid-100's both days.

There will be cooling centers available in our area, go here to find the one nearest you. With the heatwave in our area, the American Red Cross has some ideas on what you can do to help beat the heat.

Have a plan if the power goes out. Go here to see how to be ready for a power outage.

If you don't have air conditioning, find places that you can go when it's at it's hottest. Spend a little extra time at Dunkin' or go to the library.

Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water, even if you don't feel thirsty. Avoid caffeine or alcohol.

Eat smaller meals more often, instead of two or three big meals.

If you have to be outdoors, take breaks, and don't be alone. Make sure someone is with you or they know where you are.

This seems obvious but don't ever leave kids or pets alone in the car.

If you know someone that doesn't have air conditioning or they live alone, check up on them. Invite them to join you at the library or go to the movies. Have them go to your place if you have AC.

Do your best to keep cool and don't push it this weekend. We want you around for a long time.
