Gillibrand Says Cuomo Impeachment Will Be Up to State Lawmakers

Senator Kirsten Gillibrand says she hasn't contacted Governor Andrew Cuomo to discuss her call for him to resign in the wake of dual scandals.

Gillibrand and Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer on Friday issued a joint statement saying "Cuomo should resign."

The governor has indicated he has no intention of voluntarily leaving office, despite sexual harassment allegations and questions regarding the release of Covid-19 death statistics.

During a visit to Binghamton Monday, Gillibrand was asked by WNBF News what should happen now that Cuomo has made it clear he doesn't plan to resign.

Gillibrand said she believes "the investigations should proceed." State Attorney General Letitia James is overseeing one investigation and the Assembly judiciary committee is conducting another.

The senator was asked whether the legislature should move to impeach Cuomo before the investigations conclude. She said "that is their decision." With the challenges now facing New York state, she said "we need focus and leadership."

Gillibrand said she hasn't been in touch with the governor about her call for his resignation and she doesn't intend to contact him.
