Here's exhibit A in why your spur of the moment, knee-jerk reaction is not always the best response.

Country great Garth Brooks recently performed a Detroit concert at Ford Field, home of Detroit Lions.

As a way of reaching out to those in Detroit, Brooks posted a picture of himself wearing a Detroit Lions Barry Sanders jersey:

That's Barry Sanders. As in one of the greatest NFL running backs who ever lived.

However, several commenters did not take it that way, and berated Brooks for what they saw as an endorsement for 2020 presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders. Here are some gems that people posted in response:

So I guess there are two takeaways from this:

  1. Some people don't know/don't remember about one of the greatest NFL players who ever lived.
  2. A lot of times we think we know the whole story, but we actually don't.
  3. Our minds are so fixated on politics that we let our passionate political views take over sometimes.

You may remember former TV journalist Josh Martin from his time working for 12 News here in Binghamton. He now works for Newschannel 9 in Syracuse, but I think he said it best when talking about the lesson we all need to learn from this situation:

Listen, I find myself in this kind of mindset from time to time. I'm not blameless.

However, there have also been plenty of times where I have begun to type out a fiery response to something that I don't like, but then told myself, "This isn't worth it."

Those times where I decide to simply let it go are honestly the most freeing. I then go about my day in a much better mood because I'm not harboring some kind of strange resentment toward someone I've never met.

In the words of Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers, "R-E-L-A-X, relax. We're gonna be okay."
