The Broome County Arts Council is searching for a new space for its downtown gallery after the facility had to leave a Binghamton building city officials had deemed unsafe.

The Artisan Gallery had been located on the first floor of the First National Bank Building at 95 Court Street for two-and-a-half years.

Condemnation notices were posted on the building in May ordered everyone out.

Gallery manager Constance Barnes said the downtown location was perfect for the facility. She spoke as she packed items in the gallery that were to be moved to a storage space.

Barnes expressed disappointment that the situation involving the building's condition was forcing the gallery and others leasing space there to relocate.

Building owner Isaac Anzaroot has been at odds with the city regarding code-related issues. He has said he might consider tearing down the 92-year-old structure, although Mayor Richard David said a demolition permit would not be granted.
