Students and staff were forced out of a school on Binghamton's West Side when a fire was reported in a restroom.

The blaze at West Middle School on Highland Avenue was discovered shortly before 9:30 Tuesday morning.

According to a statement released by city school superintendent Tonia Thompson, the fire was started in the girls' restroom on the school's third floor. No injuries were reported.

Students remained outside while firefighters extinguished the blaze and ventilated the building.

A fire department duty chief said the alarm came in at 9:26 a.m. He declared the fire out ten minutes later. He said there was some fire, smoke and water damage because of the blaze.

The duty chief said actual fire damage was confined to the "contents of the bathroom."

Students were able to return to the building around 10:30 a.m. The last firefighters left the school at 10:54 a.m.

The fire is under investigation. The superintendent's statement said "students who are involved in such behavior face severe disciplinary action" in accordance with the district's code of conduct.
