Does New York Have the Nosiest Neighbors?
Everyone has a neighbor story. Maybe it's the person who always seems to know what's going on in the neighborhood or it's the neighbor who keeps an eye on everything on the block. The good news for New Yorkers? A new survey suggests our neighbors aren't nearly as nosy as those in many other states.
New York Ranks Near the Middle
Researchers surveyed 2,000 Americans to find out where people are most likely to have nosy neighbors. New York ranked 23rd in the nation, putting the Empire State in the middle of the pack.
Few People Report Camera Spying
One of the surprising findings involved security cameras. Only 8% of New York respondents said they believe a neighbor has used surveillance cameras to spy on them. While doorbell cameras and home security systems have become common, most New Yorkers don't seem worried about neighbors using it to snoop.
Most Neighbors Keep Their Hands Off Your Mail
The survey also found that only 11% of New Yorkers reported having a neighbor who went through their mail or packages. While package theft is a concern in some areas, most people said they have not seen that type of behavior from someone nearby.

Unannounced Visits Can Be Common
The most common complaint involved neighbors showing up without warning. 25% of New Yorkers said they have a neighbor who will stop by unannounced. That means one out of every four people has dealt with the unexpected knock at the door from time to time.
The Bottom Line
While most New Yorkers have probably dealt with an annoying neighbor at some point, the survey suggests residents of the Empire State have fewer problems with nosy neighbors than many other states. Go here to see the entire list of nosiest neighbors.
