Family Awaits Results of Probe in Binghamton Speedway Death

Four months after a man died while working in a fuel tank at a Broome County Speedway convenience store, his relatives are still waiting for the findings of a federal investigation.

57-year-old Arthur Hines of Syracuse was killed September 20 following a reported blast inside a tank at the job site on Front Street in the town of Dickinson.

Hines had been working for Environmental Products and Services of Vermont on a modernization project at the store.

The federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration has been investigating what caused the death of Hines. His wife and brother Monday said they have heard nothing about the status of the review.

The agency's website indicates a conference on the case was held on November 25. OSHA officials normally don't comment on an open investigation. The agency has up to six months to complete a review of an employer.

Dickinson town supervisor Michael Marinaccio said he has heard nothing regarding the investigation. He noted the renovation work at the Speedway store apparently was completed in December.
