When it comes to hunting and fishing in New York State, women are grossly underrepresented, or so says the New York Department of Environmental Conservation and they want to change that.

The DEC is looking for females in New York State who hunt and fish and then, they'd like to use photos of those women in upcoming marketing campaigns and social media posts. The DEC hopes that that end result will be that by showing photos to young girls of women fishing, it will encourage young girls to do the same and to get more involved in outdoor activities.

In a press release, DEC Commissioner Basil Seggos said, "Women are an underrepresented, yet growing segment of New York State's angling public, and we want to highlight them in action. Collecting and sharing photos of these female anglers-of all ages and abilities-will inspire women and girls to get outside and cast a line."

The DEC is looking for photos that fall into the following categories:

  • Freshwater fishing
  • Saltwater Fishing
  • Ice Fishing
  • Youth (girls) fishing
  • Mothers and Children/Multi-Generational
  • Action shots (Casting, reeling, or landing the big one!)

If you’re a female and all about the outdoors, you can submit a photo of yourself (through July 8th) to womenhuntfishny@dec.ny.gov. Keep in mind that any photo you send to the DEC will become their property and you'll be giving them permission to use your image however they'd like.
