People who live in a quiet town of Union neighborhood say they are opposed to plans to construct a large apartment complex near their homes.

CDS Housing LLC of Webster has submitted a proposal for a four-story 125,000-square-foot building on Hooper Road, just south of Maine-Endwell High School.

The initial plans call for 115 apartments which would be occupied by seniors meeting income requirements.

The town zoning board of appeals has approved a variance to permit a building taller than the 30-feet allowed under current regulations.

Residents who live in a neighborhood just west of the project site signed petitions expressing opposition to the development.

Ray Wetherbee, CDS director of affordable housing, said the complex could cost about $18 million.

Although the original proposal provided to the town of Union specifies 115 apartments, Wetherbee said the project may ultimately have 60 to 65 units.

The proposed senior housing complex would be located west of Hooper Road near Maine-Endwell High School.

Wetherbee said CDS is working to determine the community's senior housing needs.

If local approvals are received, CDS Housing would apply for state funding to cover some of the cost of the project.

The town planning board may consider the project at its meeting Tuesday evening.
